Social Media 101: Getting Started

Half-Day Continuing Education Seminar

On June 24, 2008 more than 80 people attended the first GBTC continuing education seminar, Social Media 101:Getting Started. The event was held at the University of Baltimore, Thumel Business Center from 8:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. with both GBTC members and guests in attendance. The seminar began with a networking breakfast, followed by three information-packed sessions, and closed with a panel Q&A over lunch.

As an ambassador of email marketing and new media, Greg Cangialosi has built a reputation as a pioneer in today's online landscape. Cangialosi is a seasoned e-mail marketing veteran, developing and executing successful strategies for a wide and diverse client base. His organization, behind some of today's most successful email marketing initiatives, works with brands of national and international scope, from leading Fortune 500 companies to performing artists such as Justin Timberlake. In addition to email marketing strategy, he has pioneered corporate podcasting initiatives for companies including Verizon Wireless, GM/ Pontiac, Disney, Dow Chemical and Ortho-McNeil. Cangialosi is also the author of "The Business Podcasting Book" by Focal Press. He is a graduate of University of Maryland Baltimore (UMBC) and serves on the board of directors for the University's alumni association as well as the UMBC Training Centers.

SmartLogic Solutions is a Baltimore-based consulting firm that specializes in creating interactive web applications. SmartLogic uses new media and social media tools to achieve clients' goals. Since founding the company in 2005, Yair has architected, designed and managed the creation of many successful web applications. Yair also develops strategic partnerships for the company and drives the long-term vision for SmartLogic.

Yair received his BS and MSE in Computer Science from Johns Hopkins University in May of 2006. In 2007 Yair received Baltimore Business Journal's "40 Under 40" award.

Jared Goralnick's passion is helping businesses save time through more efficient usage of their technology. For example, his company, SET Consulting, most recently developed AwayFind.com, a web service that helps solve the problem of too much email.

Jared's clients include NTT Communications, the National Institute of Standards and Technology, Aerotek and hundreds of others. Prior to founding SET Consulting in 2002, he worked at numerous technology startups, as well as at the Federal Trade Commission. Jared earned a software engineering degree at age 17 from Framingham State College and a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy with Honors from the University of Maryland.

Matt Goddard leads R2i's strategic direction while providing valuable support to client digital marketing projects. Matt's understanding of social network theory is frequently called upon by R2i clients and partners as they develop their short and long term strategic plans. Prior to his work with R2i, Matt was co-founder of Impreza, a leading digital marketing and technology firm. After the acquisition of Impreza by Sinclair Broadcast Group (SBGI), Matt began Round 2 Communications (R2). Strategy and account planning, media relations support. Geoff has worked as a public relations strategist in the Washington, D.C. region for 15 years. Dubbed a "local blogging guru" by the Washington Post, Geoff's award-winning book on new media "Now is Gone" was released in 2007. The book has been cited by the Wall Street Journal as a valuable resource for social media. Sean leads the Business Development activities for Baltimore based Congruent Media. He has developed and implemented internal interactive marketing strategy, as well strategy plans for his clients. Prior to Congruent Media, Sean was the Director of Sales and Marketing for SCD Information Technology. He has worked in business development roles within the technology sector since graduating from Appalachian State University with a Journalism degree in 2002.

From his initial childhood foray into local BBSes through a dial-up 2400 Baud Modem, Sean has been an avid believer in the leveling power and opportunities digital communications and the internet present to users. Sean utilizes his lifelong online experiences to help companies understand, and correctly engage, audiences on the web.

David Troy is a serial technology entrepreneur. He founded a mail computer sales firm at age 14 in 1986, and transitioned into the Internet Service Provider market when he founded ToadNet, a prominent ISP in the mid-Atlantic area. He was an initial investor in Core Communications, a profitable CLEC based in Annapolis, Maryland. In 2004, he sold ToadNet to Landmark Communications (parent company of the Weather Channel, Trader Publications, and several other media properties) in an all-cash deal.

David is the founder and CEO of Popvox, LLC, a global VoIP consultancy providing design and operations support to emerging carriers in Europe, South America, Canada, and the United States. He is an active contributor to Asterisk, author of the AstManProxy manager proxy, and develops code for OpenSER. He lives in Arnold Maryland with his wife and two children, and is a certificated private pilot.

In 2006, he developed innovative distributed callcenter technology using Asterisk, OpenSER, and Ruby on Rails, which was used in the 2006 US elections.

In 2007 he developed the sites Twittervision and Flickrvision, which will be featured at the Museum of Modern art in New York in 2008. His most recent project is spinvision.tv, which allows viewers to see videos from around the world.

As a writer-strategist and communications producer with over 25 years of experience, David Beaudouin worked for leading advertising agencies and Fortune 500 companies before launching his present Baltimore-based communications firm, DB+C, in 1995. David first became involved with interactive communications and online branding in the late 1980s, including marketing work for early commercial BBS services such as Prodigy. With the Web's introduction in the early 90s, he authored one of the first instructional guides (published by IABC in 1995) on corporate website development. Since that time, he has worked extensively with clients on interactive marketing projects, with an emphasis on positioning, information architecture, content strategy and management, and usability planning. More recently, he has helped clients develop meaningful social media programs to build their authenticity and reputation with customers online.

Catherine Pancake joined Web Ad.vantage as Director of Account Management in 2003 Since joining Web Ad.vantage, Catherine has spearheaded, streamlined and managed the agency's collective search marketing initiatives, ensuring that Web Ad.vantage is at the forefront of the industry and that client needs are met and exceeded. Catherine has helped clients such as Johns Hopkins Carey School of Business, Harvard Health, Connections Academy, Nokia USA, Check Point, and Endo Pharma achieve their search marketing objectives. She was previously the VP Operations at The Berndt Group Ltd., a nationally competitive web design and integration firm in Baltimore.
